Preliminary Exercise 2: Roland Barthes' Theory of Semiotics

 Introduction

Roland Barthes is a French literary theorist known for his works on semiotics, structuralism, and post-structuralism. He explored the relationship between language, culture, and meaning. Barthes theory is of semiotics, which is the study the study of signs and symbols and their use or interpretation. Barthes also contributed to structuralism, emphasizing the underlying structures that shape language and culture. The purpose of the assignment is to aim on how to analyze on how meaning is created and communicated through signs and symbols in various cultural contexts. Barthes theory can be seen in the film "Inception". It demonstrates that the denotation in the film is the act of convincing another to do something desired. And the connotation of the film would be subconscious manipulation. It symbolically delves into the complexities of planting ideas and representing a metaphor.

Reflection: What I learned from Roland Barthes theory is that I can now understand and interpret cultural phenomena through signs and symbols. Barthes work is widely utilized in fields such as cultural, media studies, semiotics.

Preliminary Exercise 1: Semiotics

Introduction to Ferdinand de Saussure's Theory of Semiotics

Who is Ferdinand? Ferdinand was a Swiss linguist, semiotician and philosopher. Who made a foundation to many significant developments. What is his theory? his theory was of language from two different perspectives, language is a system of signs. The objective of the preliminary exercise is to analyze media products and evaluate my work by applying knowledge and understanding of theoretical and creative approaches. I think Saussure's theory is important to film, for example the animation film Tom and Jerry.

Reflection

What I learned from Saussure's theory is the relationship between signs and the meanings they convey, I understand how language and symbols influence communication and perception. Saussure's theory emphasizes how meaning relies on the connection between signs in language and communication, highlighting the importance of understanding the signifier and signified components of signs.
