 Research Part 5: Mise en scene Codes 

 

Codes 

Codes are technical techniques used to communicate meaning, for example low key lighting to heighten suspense in Thriller films or Film Noir. Use your knowledge and understanding to identify the codes in the media text(s) you are researching. For example, these may include titling, mise en scene, camera movement, framing, fonts, graphics, sound effects, and editing. When you have identified the codes post the results of your findings to your blog and explain how you might use them in your proposed production. 

  1. Setting 

  1. Define the setting in the film.

Denote each element noticed in the film opening. 

 

Indicate connotations that support the genre. How do the setting elements indicate or support the genre and storytelling of the film opening? Provide codes to support your answers.

This is a very present time the director uses this year to emphasis relatability the audience able to connect with the characters. The audience able to detect any technology that lead to a character downfall like social media stalks or bullied.

These location are mostly where student are found it help understand the character relationship with its environment. While it create multiple opportunities for director to build tension between the character’s. 

• Climate / Season

Add depth and irony where the perfect blooming spring could be the most terrifying season for these students. The produce uses this season to trick the audience. This climate is uses perfect for plot twist. 

Geography• Landscape or Outdoors / City / Country / Sea / Land / Desert. 

 

The Complutense University of Madrid 

Director uses schools to help attract target audience like teenagers. It also helps the audience understand the stereotype character that they might be expose characters. 

• Culture / People (Moral attitudes/ core beliefs.) 

 

High school students 

Help establish the age group and what to be expected how they dress the fashion like special trend this help put together the time period because base of the way the character speak dress and behave. For example: some people believe that high school student creates lots of dramas (teenage drama), whether it’s romance or friendship drama, this leaves the audience with lot of anticipation and curiosity. 

• Social and Economic status 

Low middle income 

Low middle income is very relatable, low-income background strikes a balance between relatability an escapism. This indicate that the character will undergoes many struggles and might even make decision that goes against their value or belief. The character going to a public-school help indicate she’s somewhere in the middle income. 

 

  1. Set Design 

  • Define set design in film. 

  • Document and describe the set design for the film opening.  

  • What connotations do you read from the décor? 

  • How does the set design illustrate and support the characters and story and/or connect audiences to the film’s genre? 

  • Indicate the signs and connotations that support the genre.

Is a specialized field in film production that focuses on creating the physical environment in which a movie unfolds 

-The set design of the movie revolve around book the production designer choose library which ties back to the title killer book club 

-Fake blood or red always signifies danger. 

-some students lives will be in danger and might have to fight to escape from danger

  1. Select props that are genre-significant to the film opening of the film. Document how they support the genre and storytelling.

- A hammer: The main character use a hammer as a killing weapond, hammer also signifies brutalities  

- cellphone: Are usually use for communication but can also be use for threat which help with the plot developmentxdx

The art of performance where actors portray characters and tell a story through body language and dialogue

Character development, emotional range, voice and dialogue delivery

  1. Based on your understanding of casting, do you think the actors selected to play the film's characters were good choices? List (2) actors and (2) reasons why?  

-The main actors selected to play the main character Veki Velilla she show Angela character development in depth, she demonstrates the feeling angela was feeling from worry to calm to serious natural. 

-The actor Alvaro Mel they as the secondary supporting character Javier help add more depth and complexity to the plot about who is the killer. Which help the audience remain thrilled enough to watch the movie.

  1. What is a costume in a film? 

The clothing/ Costume reveal a character personality, social status and so on. 

  1. What is hair and makeup in film? 

Hair and makeup help create a specific unique look that match the role and personality of the character the actor is performing. 

  1. List 3 genre factors that influenced the costume design in this film. 

Setting, tone and atmosphere and character roles.

Public schools allow student to wear their own choice of outfit which help the student express their own self aesthetic to their best ability. Where the color they choose to wear reflect their personality.

Producers use color in their film expresses emotion such as red anger, yellow happiness, black sadness 

  1. Indicate how color was used in the opening of the film. E.g., setting, lighting the scene and characters, costumes, etc. (Create a table to organize your information.) 

The producer use color that are near neutral to help keep balance while giving ever character a unique special characteristic. The producer also use color that are near black to help support the genre.

The color help match the characters personality for instance the character sara and her aesthetic is very colorful where to as Sebas who appear to be very mysterious is mostly surrounded by black.

How the element in a shot is arrange and captured 

  1. Define blocking in film. Document an example in the film opening and how the placement of characters illustrates their relationship. 

The cameras precise camera set-up and movement to tell a story 

In the opening of the movie killer book club the character sat in a circular formation while pan camera movement was use to focus on each individual.

The quality , the source and the color of light that is use to create an atmosphere in a movie 

  1. Document if the film opening established low-key or high-key lighting.  

The movie opening use low key lighting to add a sense of mystery. 

  1. Select an image from the film opening to analyze. What type of lighting is used? How is lighting used in the film's opening, and what tone does it communicate meaning? 

Artificial and natural light, the natural light gave sense of fresh new start for school but the artificial light was use on low which add sense of mystery.

Suspense, mystery and dark humor

What type of tone was created in the film, what mise en scene elements were used to make it, and does it support the story and genre of the film opening The type of lighting plus extra setting like the club meeting place was in a place like a secret room with lot of dark color the professor dresses all black. The character jokes hurt other like rai joke to koldo.
